Having successfully defended his doctoral thesis and qualified to practice dental surgery, Dr Michaux still sought acceptable solutions to his patients’ common tooth loss problems. He decided to specialize in oral biology and periodontology - the treatment of conditions related to tissues supporting teeth (bones and gums), such as gingivitis and periodontitis – as well as tooth replacement using implants.

His research led to an advanced degree in periodontology, followed up with another master’s thesis in implantology in 1985. In 1999 he received a University Degree in Implant Surgery and Prosthetics, a recently established qualification soon to be required for all European practitioners in this discipline.

He has continued his university studies since, following the curriculum of the University of Montpellier’s CES programs, first in medical and dental expertise and then in health quality, resulting in the accreditation and certification of his medical centre’s technical facilities.

In his search for excellence and safety in oral implant therapy, he was one of the first practitioners to be trained in 1986 in Professor Bränemark’s technique using the NOBELBIOCARE system.

During one of his training periods he was approached by the Swedish pharmaceutical firm ASTRA (now ASTRAZENECA), to be part of an international team to develop a new implant system to treat tooth loss.
